Google’s position on 8

Posted by brightcoast on October 31, 2008

I was quite surprised that Google decided to take a stance on the issue, and delighted to find out they are against prop 8. You can find their blog entry about it here. I’m so glad to see that politicians, celebrities, companies, and heck even the good ole AALS are throwing their support behind upholding the fundamental right. I only hope the CA general electorate will be so American.

3 States to Victory: Halloween Edition

Posted by demkid on October 31, 2008

Virginia: No new polls! How can it be??? Well, I bet there will be more than one tomorrow.  I hear Senator Obama will be back one last time on Monday.

Pennsylvania: +5; +10    The 5-pointer is from a Republican polling firm, and the 10-pointer is the daily tracking poll.  Haven’t heard of any last visit by Obama.

New Hampshire: +7; +11; +14; +7; +15; +9    Wow, that’s a lot of polls for one day!  Looks like the average is about 10…nothing to be worried about.  McCain plans on making one more visit over the weekend, for a symbolic last town hall.  Best of luck on that one.

Happy Halloween!!

Guess I Should go to Ohio for a Job

Posted by brightcoast on October 31, 2008

You can find the article here detailing the anticipated voter melee that will outlast the actual Presidential election itself. So long as we don’t have any more Bush v. Gore‘s then hopefully it won’t turn out too bad. Here’s the main thing I don’t understand, if they’ve had so many problems in the past why don’t they do the only logical thing and “FIX IT!” ?

Breaking: Final Prop 8 Field Poll

Posted by demkid on October 30, 2008

YES: 44%

NO: 49%

Within the margin of error, and I hear that the YES side is leading in early voting.  Cross your fingers, and if you want to help out, contribute!

3 States to Victory: 5 Days Left

Posted by demkid on October 30, 2008

Virginia: +4; +4    Well, these polls are closer than the two from yesterday, but 4 points is still a safe margin.  I’d be concerned if there was more than one poll showing this race at 3 or less in the next few days.  I think VA is definitely THE state to watch on Tuesday.  I think Senator Obama should make one final trip there before then (even though he was there today!)  This would mean either Sunday or Monday (he’ll be in the Western battlegrounds on Saturday.)

Pennsylvania: +4; +13; +12    The Mason/Dixon poll looks to be an outlier at this point.  While Obama’s lead is only 4, McCain only polls 43%.  Nothing to be too worried about, unless polls in the next couple of days back up this lower margin.  Probably a final trip to PA Sunday or Monday would be worthwhile.

New Hampshire: +13; +18    McCain has reduced his ad spending here, and these polls show that the race is pretty much over.

Leading Legal Scholars Reject Prop 8 Arguments

Posted by demkid on October 30, 2008

Funny how there isn’t one USD Law professor on this list of 59.  That makes USD Law the only major California law school not represented, by my count.  Oh wait, Pepperdine isn’t on there either…I wonder why.

3 States to Victory: 6 Days Left

Posted by demkid on October 29, 2008

Virginia: +9; +7    Holding steady…

Pennsylvania: +14; +12; +12; +13    Pretty damn consistent.

New Hampshire: +24; +18    This should really be removed from the list at this point, but I’ll keep it, just for kicks!

In sum, great numbers today.  VA is really the only state to keep an eye on in this last week.

A suit involving roofies, and it’s not what you think

Posted by brightcoast on October 29, 2008

But rather, it’s a LA band suing the Hives for copyright infringement, or more accurately, ripping off their song. You can find a basic article here. The local radio played the songs back to back yesterday while reporting the story, and so I can’t wait to hear what the Hives answer. The songs sound identical to me. It’s not clear from the articles that I’ve found exactly what stage the suit is in, but I get the impression that the Roofies just filed, which is why there is so much press about it. Will post when more news surfaces. I can’t figure how to get the youtube videos in this post, so you’ll have to link through the article to get there.

Thank You, Senator!

Posted by demkid on October 29, 2008

Senator Feinstein is far and away my favorite public servant, and I don’t say that just because I interned for her one summer.  She knows how to get things done, is terrific at finding consensus on important issues, and is clearly smart and compassionate.  She’s an invaluable moderate voice in the Senate and an extremely popular representative of the Golden State.  In her position, she realizes that her opinion can carry a lot of weight, but she doesn’t throw it around publicly that often.  Now, with the forces of the Right trying hard to push through their overt discrimination next Tuesday, the Senator has decided that enough is enough.  I applaud her for the following commercial that hit the airwaves yesterday, as it will likely be the final NO on 8 statement before Election Day.  It also will likely be the knife in the heart of the YES campaign.  We should all be thankful for such a terrific Senator!

Dick Morris: Slimiest of the Slimeballs

Posted by demkid on October 29, 2008

I was thinking of the best statement to put after the colon in the above title, and settled on the one you see.  Then, just for kicks, I googled “slimiest of the slimeballs” and was pleasantly surprised at the very first entry that popped up.  (Go ahead, try it!)

In any case, Dick Morris is definitely the worst person to grace the Fox News airwaves right now, and that’s saying a lot.  Outside of his history, his voice is annoying, and he never fails to spew the most hateful and ignorant rhetoric about anything related to the Democratic Party or its candidates/politicians.  I guess I shouldn’t be shocked when he writes crazy shit like this.  The only line you really need to read for a few good laughs is “[D]on’t write Obama off.”  The rest is just pure crap from a blatantly disgusting man.

With 7 Days Left, Obama’s Easiest Path

Posted by demkid on October 28, 2008

As Virginia goes...

As Virginia goes...

Senator Obama is now up over 7 points on average in Virginia, higher than in Colorado.  I’m not saying that this will be the final map, but it’s Obama’s easiest path to the nomination with a week to go.  If McCain can’t make any significant move in any of these blue states, it’s over.

PS – I’ll post new poll numbers each day until the election for the 3 of these blue states that could (in the slightest foreseeable way) tip: New Hampshire, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.  (Hey! I mentioned those before!)

NH: +11; +25

VA (from yesterday): +4; +9; +7; +8; +11

PA: +7; +9; +12

Prop 8

Posted by brightcoast on October 27, 2008

They started running the No on Prop 8 ads recently. I’ve been thinking that of all the states in the Union, California is up there, at least in theory, with the most progressive, and therefore, this constitutional amendment should not pass. The two biggest problems I have with it are this: 1) constitutions shouldn’t be amended every time people get upset with a court decision they disagree with– if it’s truly that bad, then at least give it some time to work itself out in the real world and see what happens, contrary to many people’s thoughts, gay marriage will not be the end of the world; 2) seriously, what is the big deal? I understand that people don’t agree with or support gay marriage, but what I don’t understand is why they have to prevent people who obviously care for each other just as much as heterosexual couples do from enjoying the same legal rights. And let me tell you, a civil union is the separate and inherently unequal akin to that Brown addressed, albeit in a different context.

Because I can’t bear to leave the state if this were to pass, I’m hoping I can convince those who are so opposed to it to leave instead. Then I can enjoy the tolerant, progressive Golden State that I love so much. There are, what, 48 other states (maybe 47) that should give those yes on Prop 8’ers their intolerant fixes.

The Diva from Wasilla

Posted by demkid on October 26, 2008

Some of the quotes in this story are priceless.  Apparently this is the kind of stuff that comes out in the dying days of a presidential campaign.  I don’t blame the McCain aides…having the running mate ignore strategy and go completely off message (i.e. talking at length about the $150k clothing issue at a rally) must be frustrating when the opportunities to get back in the race are quickly diminishing.
