Palin’s Foreign Policy (In)Experience

Posted by demkid on September 18, 2008

Now that the Sarah “I Shoot Animals from Helicopters” Palin buzz is wearing off, Obama is regaining his lead in the national polls.  I’m optimistic that this lead will continue to grow somewhat before the first debate.

As someone who appreciates moderate voices on both sides of the aisle, I think it’s especially newsworthy when a moderate politician raises questions about someone from his or her own party.  That happened today, when Senator Chuck Hagel openly questioned the GOP VP nominee’s foreign policy credentials (from CNN):

“She doesn’t have any foreign policy credentials,” Hagel said in an interview with the Omaha World Herald. “You get a passport for the first time in your life last year? I mean, I don’t know what you can say. You can’t say anything.”

In defending her own foreign policy experience, Palin has said that Alaska’s proximity to Russia gives her international expertise. Hagel, a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called that notion “insulting to the American people.”

Well said, Senator!
